Na de geallieerde uitbraak uit Normandië en de bevrijding van een groot deel van Frankrijk trokken Duitse troepen zich terug in zwaar versterkte Atlantische havens. Duinkerke was een van deze geïsoleerde “Atlantische pockets”. In plaats van een kostbare frontale aanval besloten de geallieerden de stad te omsingelen en het Duitse garnizoen af te sluiten. Het beleg werd voornamelijk uitgevoerd door de Tsjechoslowaakse Onafhankelijke Pantserbrigade, ondersteund door Britse en Canadese troepen. In de stad hielden ongeveer 10.000 Duitse soldaten onder bevel van admiraal Friedrich Frisius stand in sterke verdedigingslinies. Hoewel het beleg tegenwoordig weinig bekend is, vonden er maandenlang artilleriebeschietingen, patrouilles en lokale aanvallen plaats. In april 1945 lanceerden de Duitsers zelfs Operatie Blücher, een tegenaanval op de geallieerde linies. Het geïsoleerde garnizoen gaf zich uiteindelijk op 9 mei 1945 over, na de algemene capitulatie van Duitsland.
