Deze vond eind april 1945 plaats tijdens de Slag om Berlijn, waarbij de Sovjet-troepen de Reichstag als krachtig symbool van nazi-Duitsland als doelwit kozen. Ondanks het symbolische belang ervan werd het gebouw fel verdedigd door een mix van Duitse soldaten, waaronder SS-troepen en Franse collaborateurs. De Sovjet-troepen stuitten op hevig verzet toen ze onder zwaar vuur het open terrein overstaken, waarna ze zich kamer voor kamer een weg door het gebouw vochten. De gevechten waren wreed, met granaten, machinepistolen en man-tegen-man-gevechten in met rook gevulde zalen. Hoewel Sovjet-soldaten de rode vlag boven de Reichstag hesen, gingen de gevechten binnen nog urenlang door. Uiteindelijk stortte het Duitse verzet in en gaven honderden zich over.
